Too Rough? Too Heavy? The 3 Myths About Concrete Tables (And Why They’re Wrong)

Too Rough? Too Heavy? The 3 Myths About Concrete Tables (And Why They’re Wrong)

When you mention a concrete dining table to most people, you can almost see the mental cogs turning. They smile politely, but you know exactly what they’re picturing: a grey, brutalist slab of motorway flyover sitting awkwardly in the middle of their open-plan kitchen or out on the patio.

It’s an image that conjures up words like cold, industrial, scratchy, and impossible to move.

We get it. If your only experience with concrete is a garden paving slab or a construction site, why on earth would you want to eat your dinner off it?

But there is a world of difference between industrial aggregate and the refined, artisanal concrete we pour by hand in our Dorset workshop. If you’ve been sitting on the fence about bringing a concrete piece into your home or garden because you simply don't trust how it will live day-to-day, let’s dismantle the three biggest myths keeping you from making the leap.

Myth 1: "Concrete will stain the moment someone spills a glass of Rioja"

This is the absolute number one anxiety we hear. People assume concrete is a sponge that will permanently drink up red wine, olive oil, or lemon juice.

If you left raw, untreated concrete exposed to the elements? Yes, it would stain. But we do not supply raw concrete.

Every single MassWorks table top goes through a meticulous curing and sealing process. We treat our surfaces with specialist, multi-layered sealers that penetrate deep into the material. This creates an invisible, microscopic shield. When your guest knocks over a glass of red or drops a dollop of ketchup, the liquid doesn't sink in - it sits on top, waiting to be promptly wiped away with a damp cloth and some warm, soapy water.

No harsh chemicals, no frantic scrubbing. It lives just as easily as timber, but without the constant need for sanding down and re-oiling every year.  We supply two sealing options with our concrete tables – standard and commercial.  The latter is for high footfall environments, such as restaurants and cafes.

Myth 2: "Concrete tables are too cold, rough, and industrial for a cosy home"

There’s a misconception that concrete belongs strictly in ultra-modern, minimalist spaces. People worry it will feel abrasive to touch or make their dining room feel like a commercial gallery.

The reality of real, GRC (glass reinforced) concrete is entirely different. It is incredibly tactile. Because our pieces are hand-poured and finished by eye, they have a buttery-smooth feel, yet they retain those beautiful, organic variations—tiny air pockets and subtle tonal shifts—that give them a soul.

Furthermore, concrete is a thermal mass. It isn't inherently freezing. Indoors, it absorbs the ambient temperature of your room. On a chilly morning, it feels neutral; on a warm evening, it holds onto the room's heating, making it incredibly comforting to lean on. Pair a concrete top with our tapered oak legs, and you instantly soften the industrial edge, creating a piece that anchors a warm, family kitchen just as well as a sleek patio.

Myth 3: "It’ll fall through my floorboards"

Yes, real concrete has weight to it. We don't do faux micro-cement or hollow plastic imitations here. But unless you live in a house made of matchsticks, your floorboards are perfectly safe.

A standard MassWorks round dining table top is intelligently engineered to be lighter internally, retaining all its structural integrity and thick, premium edge profile without unnecessary, floor-stressing dead weight.

While some of our solid concrete plinth bases are indeed substantial (often around 70kg, which is exactly what stops them from ever wobbling when the kids knock into them), the weight is distributed evenly across the floor. It’s no heavier than a solid cast-iron bath or a massive oak dresser. And for our indoor tables, we pay careful attention to the contact points, ensuring they sit happily.

The Verdict

Choosing furniture is an investment in how you live. Timber warps in the British rain, glass scratches and plastic fades in the sun.

Real, handcrafted GRC concrete doesn't compromise. It gives you the architectural weight of stone, the smooth luxury of marble, and a level of sheer, hard-wearing durability that means it will still look magnificent decades from now.

If you’re still unsure, don’t take our word for it. Let us send you a physical sample. Feel the finish, see how the light hits the colour options. We think you’ll change your mind about what concrete can be.
